Sarteneja is a village in the Corozal District of Belize. It is located on the coasts of the Sarteneja Peninsula, about 65 km from Orange Walk Town and close to the Shipstern Conservation & Management Area. The village is heavily influenced by fishing.
Sarteneja is best known for its shipbuilding, the sailing regatta during Easter and the festivities surrounding the Finados (Día de los Muertos). The airport of Sarteneja is located on the eastern edge of the village.
Here you can enjoy nature away from the big tourist crowds. There were probably Mayan settlements here in the early years of the first millennium. Numerous structures bear witness to this. The fact is that the original Mayan name for the town was Tza Ten-A-Ha. This means water from the rock and goes back to the many wells that are often found here. Until the 18th century there was a Mayan settlement here, but then it was abandoned.
