Sarteneja used to be a sleepy fishing village and is located on a peninsula surrounded by lush nature of the Shipstern Jungle National Park and the Bacalar Chico National Park & Marine Reserve, a Unesco World Heritage Site. With a little luck, you’ll encounter jaguars, pumas, howler monkeys, manatees, turtles, rays, deer, peccaries and maybe even an ocelot in a day. Birders are also delighted by the variety of colorful birds everywhere.
Today, many organizations such as Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development, the outstanding Manatee Program of wildtracks or Shipstern Conservation & Management Area, a nature reserve managed from Switzerland, are committed to preserving the unique diversity and beauty of nature.
